Damn You American Education System
I would like to thank the wonderful American education system for my utter wrong answer today in German class. We were discussing subjunctive phrases in German and she asked me for a subjunctive phrase in English so we could translate it.
Me: "If I were him, I would have done that."
Professor: "Wow, that is just totally.... (Me smiling thinking I finally got something correct) ...totally WRONG."
Was what I stated, and that IS a subjunctive phrase. Apparently, him should be he because its not a dative case.
Just three more days of total embrassment, and I will be done with it. AWESOME!

Yeah. If only we spoke English the same way we wrote it. It's hard enough to be unilingual, much less try to learn GERMAN.

Dear Rob,
The professor was nitpicking, if you ask me. English is not a ruthlessly grammatical language, as German may be (never having studied it, I can't make a definite statement).
In English we often use "me" where the logical pronoun would be "I". For example, showing someone a photograph: "This is my mom [American spelling! I'm so cross-cultural], this is my dad, and this is me". Now the use of the copula calls for case agreement between subject and predicate: the result would be "This is I". But no one EVER says (or writes, for that matter) "This is I".
Likewise, when you knock at a door, and your friend inside asks "Who is it?", you say "It's me." The phrase "It is I" is only of archaic or facetious use in English (both spoken and written).
No doubt German is a thoroughly respectable language, but that doesn't mean that we should recast English according to the German model.
How about this for proper use of the subjunctive? "I should like to thank you, Professor X, for publicly humiliating me. It was so kind of you. Nevertheless, one of my correspondents begs to differ with your analysis. In fact, he thinks that you may be an ass."

Sam: I do believe speaking more than one language is very important, English is not the official language in many countries or events. We arent as superior as we think we are. There are OTHERS out there besides English speaking Americans. I want to be able to learn at least 3 languages. Thats my goal. One semi down, working on one, and starting the third shortly.
The class didn't end all that bad, I got handed my paper on the way out and recieved an A! WOOHOO. I was so happy. I worked my ass off on that essay paper for weeks, and I got an A! GO ME!
I didn't say you should only learn English or that the only people in the world are English speaking Americans.
